Wooden Dog Nail Scratch Board
A scratch board that lets a dog file its own nails. Instead of restraining your dog and using clippers, you teach them to scratch at the abrasive surface, and the nail wears down as they do it.
Specification
- Wooden board with an abrasive filing surface
- Retractable design that folds away between uses
- Black
- Suitable for dogs and cats
Why people use a scratch board
Plenty of dogs hate having their paws held. If nail trims have become a fight, or your dog has had a bad experience with clippers and now pulls away at the sight of them, a board changes who is in control. The dog does the filing, at their own pace, and nothing is held still.
It also removes the risk of cutting into the quick, which is what most owners are actually nervous about.
How to introduce it
- Put the board down and reward any interest in it, without asking for anything
- Reward a paw placed on the board
- Reward a scratch, even one
- Build up over several short sessions rather than one long one
This works on front nails. Back nails are harder to file this way, and most dogs wear them down more naturally on walks anyway.
Honest expectations
A scratch board is a training project, not a five minute fix. Some dogs take to it in a week, others take longer, and a few never do. It also maintains nails rather than taking length off quickly, so if your dog’s nails are already long enough to touch the floor when standing, get them shortened properly first and use the board to keep them there.
