Getting the best out of them

Put the pad in one fixed place and leave it there. Moving it around the room undoes the association you are trying to build, and the whole point of a pad is that the puppy learns where to go.

Change the pad promptly once used. Dogs avoid soiled ground, so a pad left down too long is a pad your puppy will walk past.

Pads are a stage, not a destination. They are useful overnight, in a flat, during the weeks before a puppy is fully vaccinated, and for dogs who cannot get outside easily. Phase them out towards the door and then outdoors as soon as your puppy is physically able.
